The CWFL & now The Jr. CGFL
_The Cowichan Women's Football League was conceived in 1984 by a young girl named Debbie McGougan. She was a cheerleader at the time for a midget team in Duncan named the Cowichan Chiefs.
Her father Jim McGougan and a friend of the family Chris Mann were both coaches and she talked them into creating a women's touch football league. It took three tries before enough girls were willing to take up the pigskin.
Four teams were formed that day and over the next few years it grew to 12 teams in 1996. The sad part of this story is that Debbie passed away in 1985 with cancer at the age of 15, yet her legacy lives on in the CWFL.
Several of the Ladies that started back then are still active today, either playing or coaching. This league forms a bond with every person that steps onto the field and that relationship goes on for a life time. Mothers play with their daughters, and fathers coach their wives and daughters.
Each Sunday, you can see husbands, partners and children down at the field supporting their wives, partners, moms or sisters. We, as a league have always stood for excitement, enthusiasm, fair-play, action, fun and team work.
Playing by the rules is the number one priority for our league.
History plays a strong roll in who we are, going back to 1984 when 4 teams walked onto the gridiron, The Supras, Rebels, Dairy Queen and Trotters made up that first year. Things stayed the same with minor name changes like Blue Bombers, Blackhearts, Winjammers, Elks, Fusion, Rapids, Gators, Wanabees, Cougars and the Goldminners until 1991 when the The Wheelers joined the game. In 1993 the 1/2 Pints joined and then in 1994 the Magic, Accords, and Ravens came in to make it an 8 team league. In 1996, the Scrappers, Panthers, Wheelers, Magic, Storm, Stingers, Vipers, Receivers, 1/2 Pints, Coolers, Accords and Powers gave the league the final boost to 12 teams. Since then, the numbers have fallen away as the league it self got stronger with talent and knowledge. The drive now is to boost those numbers back up. This will be done over the next few years with each team putting in an effort to recruit new talent into the league. The names are still changing but the intensity, the fun and the competition is still as strong as it ever was. In 2022 we have added a Jr. Girls League with four teams in the 7- 11 division and 4 teams in the 12 - 15 age group over 60 girls being coached by the players in the Womens League, exciting to watch and be apart of.
Be a part of something fun with an entensity that says wow, be a part of The Cowichan Women's Football League & Jr. Girls League.
